Videostroboscopy

What is a videostroboscopy (videostrobe)?

Videostroboscopy involves viewing the physical structure of the larynx (voice box) with a strobe light and a high level of magnification. We are then able to view movement and vibration of the larynx for diagnostic purposes. No special preparation is necessary for this examination.

A scope (endoscope) is placed in the mouth and remains in the back of the patient’s mouth during the examination. Videostroboscopy is painless. NOTHING IS INSERTED INTO THE THROAT. At Metropolitan Ear, Nose and Throat Associates, your Videostrobe will be performed by a licensed speech pathologist. If necessary, a topical anesthetic may be applied to inhibit a
strong gag reflex. The effect lasts for approximately 10 minutes. The examination is video recorded utilizing a camera attached to the scope. The video recording allows your medical team to save your examination for future reference.
